Diphtheria
SYMPTOMS. Signs begin with a sore throat and progress to a high fever of
100 to 104 degrees F. There will be nausea and swallowing difficulties and
may be followed by prostration. A grayish membrane that causes swallowing
and breathing difficulties may appear in the throat or nose.
CAUSES. It is by an infected person through utensils such as handkerchiefs,
towels and other objects and by coughing and sneezing of an infected person.
TREATMENT. Antitoxin to counteract the toxic reaction of the bacteria.
.Bed rest will be necessary. Antibiotics are often used.
.Nursing care and alertness for airway obstruction will probably be required
.A vaccination with DPT should be given all infants.
